Kavarna eNewsletter, Earth Week 2007 Edition
Earth Day is Sunday, April 22nd and it's a day that encourages all of us to consider the choices that we are making and their impact on the Earth's environment. Last year, we switched Kavarna (and our home) over to WPS' NatureWise program—a surprisingly simple and affordable (especially since we will subsidize you to do the same with free espresso drinks) way to help build a market for sustainable sources of energy. We also adopted corn-based "plastics" for all of our cold containers, and tried some new composting techniques to help cut down on our waste. This year we would like to make Kavarna carbon neutral. That's the beauty of Earth Day, it invites you to ask questions about how you can improve your ecological footprint and to find ways to do it. It's especially important to take action now. The time for sitting on the fence is over; it's not a legitimate debate when you have all of the climate scientists on one side and representatives of the American Petroleum Institute on the other. Science has clearly shown that the negative effects of global warming aren't going to happen in some remote future, they are happening now and will continue to worsen. We can't kick the problem down the road to the next generation. That's already been done, and we are that generation.
Here in Northeastern Wisconsin, we're very fortunate to have an active and sophisticated environmental community. The members of the Greater Green Bay Earth Week Coalition (made up of many individuals and organizations) have put together a very full program of Earth Week 2007 activities. (If this seems repetitious, yes, we did send this same list of events just a couple of weeks ago, we apologize, but please note a couple of additions):

- » Saturday, April 21st: EcoJam Concert, featuring Augie and the Sandwich Factory, Copper Box, and Burnt Toast and Jam! Plus, presentation of the Environmental Hero Award and Leave Your Car at Home Day trophy! Holiday Inn City Centre, 200 Main Street, Green Bay, 5pm-Midnight.

- » Sunday, May 12th: Who Killed the Electric Car? Free screening of a documentary about the twisted end of California's Zero Emission Vehicle mandate. I hope that I'm not spoiling it by telling you that automakers, oil companies, and the Bush administration were involved. Linda and I watched this the other night after putting the baby in bed and it's absolutely infuriating. Kavarna, 7 pm.
Questions about these events should be sent to Jessica of the Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters. By the way, the logo up there is the work of local artist Natalie Vann, and I think it's great, it makes me smile whenever I see it.

On Saturday, April 14th, tens of thousands of Americans will gather at more than a thousand separate rallies for a National Day of Climate Action. It's time for our policy makers to take serious action to reverse the damage that we have done to our environment. Want to take part? Be at the Brown County Courthouse at noon. Leave your car at home if possible.
If you'd like to arrive in style, there will be a grand bicycle ride en masse to the courthouse leaving from Kavarna. We will be meeting at 11 am, with Ben Frye leading the ride through downtown Green Bay, arriving at the courthouse at noon for the rally. The ride will wind its way through town at a leisurely pace, it promises to be a fun event for all!
For more information about this event, and others like it across the country, check out Step It Up 2007, the national organization that's making this happen.

Fortunately, there's more to life than just fighting global warming, there's also the Coffee Clunker Classic! Mike Gerke writes, "The date for the 2007 Coffee Clunker Classic is Saturday, April 28th. Start time is 9 am at KaVarna on Broadway. We have three cafés to visit and all are located on the Westside of the Fox River, so a trail pass is not needed this year." What to expect? A fun ride about town visiting coffeehouses with a mob of wacky bicyclists. Should be a lot of fun. This is one of two rides that Mike and Pam of Easy Living Pedicabs organize every year, the other visiting chocolate shops in Fall.

May 4th, Lil' Rev, 7 pm: If you were one of the millions of people who missed the second Kavarna Ukulele Night last October, Lil' Rev brought the house down with his combination of American music and storytelling. By the end of his performance, I knew that we needed to bring him back to Kavarna for more. What Rev does is unique... he was an educator before he was a professional musician and his performances, which explore the history of American music reflect this, so expect to learn a few things as well as to be entertained. Primarily known for his ukulele playing, he is a multi-instrumentalist who also plays the harmonica (he was Hohner's 1996 National Blues Harp champion), guitar, and mandolin. This will be a family friendly evening out. Check out Lil Rev's website for more information.
June 1st, Jeanne Kuhns and Chris Irwin, 7 pm: You may be familiar with Jeanne Kuhns' beautiful paintings, which we have exhibited at Kavarna several times. She is also a talented singer and songwriter and we are happy to have her perform Kavarna again. On June 1st, she will be joined by bluegrass mandolinist Chris Irwin, whose impressive résumé includes being a certified flight instructor, as well as having performed in at least thirteen American Folklore Theater productions. It's always fun when musicians whom we enjoy perform with friends and collaborators. We're especially big fans of the mandolin.
July 20th, the Delta Jets, 7 pm: If you live in Northeastern Wisconsin and you have not yet seen the Delta Jets, then this will be a great opportunity. Dale Anderson (recently retired from the US Postal Service) and Mark Riggenbach (former Kavarna biscotti baker) are one of the very best traditional blues duos in the United States. If you find that a dubious claim, then you really need to come down to Kavarna on the 20th of July to test it for yourself. We are planning to make this an outdoor event, find a few more performers, and to have ourselves a bit of a festival behind Kavarna; so with luck this will be one of those truly great Summer nights... I hope that you'll join us.
